On the second day of the ongoing second Test match between Sri Lanka and England, England significantly solidified their position in the game. With Gus Atkinson and Matthew Potts at the crease, England finished the first day with a total of 358 runs. Atkinson gave a great performance that cemented his team’s lead in the match.
Atkinson was instrumental in helping England post a 427-run total in the first innings, scoring 118 runs in 115 deliveries. With five wickets under his belt, Asitha Fernando led Sri Lanka in wicket-taking. Milan Rathnayake and Lahiru Kumara both claimed two wickets, while Prabath Jayasuriya scored one.
Nishan Madushka and Dimuth Karunaratne, the openers, both left the game for seven runs when Sri Lanka entered the first session to bat. Moreover, the intermediate order of the side could not be very substantial either. Angelo Mathews and Pathum Nissanka each scored 12 and 22 runs, while Dinesh Chandimal added 23 runs to the score.
With two wickets apiece, Olly Stone, Matthew Potts, Chris Woakes, and Gus Atkinson were England’s top wicket takers; Shoaib Bashir also claimed one wicket.
Even though team captain Dhananjaya de Silva was dismissed for a duck, Kamindu Mendis made an effort to steady his team’s innings. Mendis led Sri Lanka to a first-inning total of 196 runs with a tenacious effort of 74 runs in 120 deliveries.
