For the opening ODI of the three-match series against the West Indies, which begins at Edgbaston on Thursday, May 29, England has revealed their starting lineup. This will be England’s first white-ball match under new captain Harry Brook, who replaces Jos Buttler after the team’s heartbreaking 2025 ICC Champions Trophy group-stage loss. Notably, Adil Rashid, a seasoned spinner, will play in his 150th ODI.
Due to their subpar tournament performances, players like Phil Salt and Liam Livingstone were removed from the ODI squad after the Champions Trophy. Livingstone, in particular, was left out of the ODI and T20I squads due to his lacklustre performance in the UAE, when he only managed 33 runs. Despite keeping his spot in the T20 leg, Salt has also been left out because to his poor performance in the 50-over format.
The selectors have trusted players like Jamie Smith, who will open the batting alongside Ben Duckett, to take their spot. Jacob Bethell, who is returning immediately from playing for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the Indian Premier League, is also included in the starting lineup. Joe Root and Butler will also be in the middle order, with Butler taking up the wicketkeeping responsibilities. Will Jacks, a batting all-arounder, has also been selected and is anticipated to provide this squad more depth.
Notably, Jofra Archer, an elite pacer for the Rajasthan Royals, was sidelined because of a thumb injury he suffered during the 2025 Indian Premier League. A hamstring injury has kept Gus Atkinson out of action, despite the fact that he played well in the Test victory against Zimbabwe. Luke Wood has taken Archer’s place, but Atkinson has not been replaced. The pace department will now be headed by Jamie Overton, Brydon Carse, and Saqib Mahmood as the two are no longer in the series.
