England’s teams for the forthcoming T20 internationals in Ireland and the white-ball series against South Africa have been announced. The side will play the Proteas in three Twenty-over matches and three One-Day Internationals (ODIs). The ODI series will begin at Headingley in Leeds on Tuesday, September 2. The opening match of the three-match Twenty20 International series versus Ireland is set for Wednesday, September 17, at Malahide in Dublin.
The England Men’s squad will be led by all-rounder Jacob Bethell for the first time when he is selected captain for the T20I series against Ireland. In an international match, the 21-year-old is expected to become the youngest skipper in English history.
Following impressive performances with the England Lions during the winter and in the shorter formats of the English domestic setup, pacer Sonny Baker was called up to his maiden international selection. With the exception of Bethell, the majority of The Three Lions’ all-format inclusions have been rested for the T20 series in Ireland. For the T20 portion of the tour, Marcus Trescothick will take over as head coach.
Since joining the England squads, Jacob Bethell has demonstrated his leadership abilities, and the series against Ireland will provide him the chance to hone those abilities on a global scale.
“We have long recognised Sonny as a player, and he showed promise during the England Lions’ winter travels last year. In an official ECB statement on Friday, England Men’s chief selector Luke Wright stated, “He has carried that form into this season in white-ball cricket with Hampshire and Manchester Originals and deservedly gets his opportunity.”
