Tony de Zorzi, a left-handed batsman, has been sidelined for the next two games in South Africa’s ODI series against England because of a hamstring injury. The injury was sustained by the 27-year-old in Leeds during the first game.
Following Matthew Breetzke’s hamstring issues, Tony de Zorzi was selected as a reserve option for the South African limited-overs team and has since proven to be a reliable addition. For the remainder of the series, the visitors will be without a backup top-order batter due to his injury.
Tony de Zorzi sustained the injury during England’s innings while fielding on the boundary.
He dived to block a strong shot from Jos Buttler and managed to keep the ball from hitting the rope. But he landed clumsily and grabbed his left hamstring right away. He was treated on the pitch, then left and didn’t come back for the remainder of the inning.
Tony de Zorzi was theoretically available to bat, but South Africa easily chased down England’s 132-run total, winning by seven wickets to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. The left-hander would go back home for scans to determine the severity of the injury, Cricket South Africa subsequently revealed.
Matthew Breetzke will return.
Since de Tony de Zorzi was already a reserve inclusion, the selectors decided not to choose a substitute. Matthew Breetzke, who has recovered from a slight hamstring strain of his own, is anticipated to regain his position. Despite missing the first match in England and the last in Australia, Breetzke, who averages 94.5 in ODIs, is finally well and ready to play.
Kagiso Rabada, the star pacer, was not present in the Leeds game due to ankle irritation, and it is unclear if he will be available for the series. Codi Yusuf was added to the team, strengthening it.
Another name being watched is Captain Temba Bavuma. Due to a hamstring injury sustained during the World Test Championship final, he has been playing under workload-management measures. In order to prevent making Bavuma’s fitness problems worse, the management is anticipated to rest him for one of the final two matches, even though he played in the first ODI.
