'Today, the Champion bids farewell': Dwayne Bravo announces retirement from all formats of cricket

Dwayne Bravo, a legendary West Indian all-rounder, has declared his retirement from cricket in all its forms. After an injury ended his final Caribbean Premier League (CPL) season, the 40-year-old made a decision.

He rose to prominence as one of T20 cricket’s most renowned players during his 21-year career. Bravo has been concentrating on franchise cricket and coaching jobs after retiring from the Indian Premier League (IPL) last year and from international cricket in 2021.

“Playing professional cricket for twenty-one years has been an amazing experience with many highs and a few lows. Most significantly, I was able to fulfil my dream because I always gave you my all. Even though I really want to keep our relationship going, it’s time to accept reality. My body can no longer take the pain, the breakdowns, the strain, and my mind’s desire to carry on. Bravo wrote on Instagram, “I can’t put myself in a situation where I might disappoint my fans, my teammates, or the teams I represent.”

I’m saying my goodbyes to the game today: Dwayne Bravo

With 631 wickets from 582 outings, the Trinidadian-born player departed as the most wicket-taker in T20 history. Throughout his career, he has taken home numerous championships from the Big Bash League, Pakistan Super League, and Indian Premier League in addition to two T20 World Cup wins with the national team. Bravo led his team to consecutive triumphs in 2017 and 2018, and he has five CPL championships overall, three of which he earned with Trinbago Knight Riders.

“Today marks my farewell to the game that has provided me with everything. I knew at the age of five that this was my dream job and that playing this sport was my destiny. I devoted my entire life to you and had no interest in anything else. You granted me and my family the life I had always imagined in exchange. I’m really grateful to you for that,” he continued.

Bravo has started working as a coach. He served as a bowling consultant for the Afghanistan men’s squad at the T20 World Cup 2024 and with the Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League in the previous year.

Thus, I humbly declare my official resignation from the sport. The Champion says goodbye for now. I want to sincerely thank all of my fans for their steadfast love and support over the years.
