Lauren Down, a gifted Kiwi batter, has now been added to the list of injured players. The 29-year-old middle order hitter was already a replacement for Bella James, who was sidelined by a quadricep strain in her right leg, after suffering a back ailment on the first morning of the series opener. Consequently, Lauren Down has been replaced by Izzy Sharp, an uncapped batsman and wicketkeeper. Interestingly, the young player who previously only played in the T20I series will now be going to Nelson to play the final two ODIs.
Due to the weather gods interrupting the first ODI, the women’s ODI series between Sri Lanka and New Zealand did not get off to a good start. It appears that the Kiwi team’s injury problems have not yet been resolved, and the second ODI is scheduled for Friday, March 7.
Ben Sawyer, the head coach of the New Zealand Women, also voiced his disappointment over Lauren Down exclusion from the series against Sri Lanka Women.
But he also highlighted the benefits of some young players being given the opportunity to play for their country, saying that Sharp will undoubtedly be welcomed by his team and that it is a terrific opportunity for her.
“Unfortunately, injuries are a part of the game, and we wish Lauren a swift recovery. We are all extremely unhappy that she will not be playing in the series. According to ESPNCricinfo, Sawyer stated, “It does provide an exciting opportunity for Izzy to join the group in Nelson for these last two matches, and we’re looking forward to welcoming her.”
Due to a friend’s wedding, Rowe will miss the third ODI.
Furthermore, there are other uncapped replacements in the side than Izzy Sharp. Additionally, Emma Black will take Hannah Rowe’s place. Surprisingly, Rowe will be absent from the third ODI in order to attend her Central Hinds teammate Mikaela Greig’s wedding as her “Maid of Honour.” Hayley Jensen, Molly Penfold, and Sophie Devine are the other well-known figures from this series who have been disqualified.
