Cricketer Digvesh Rathi has once again made news for his anti-welcoming gestures and antics on the field, this time during the Delhi Premier League 2025 Eliminator match between the West Delhi Lions and South Delhi Superstarz. Rana has also been fined half of his match money in the meantime.
“Digvesh Rathi has been fined 80% of the Match Fees for a Code of Conduct breach under Article 2.2 (Level 2) for the conduct contrary to the spirit of the game,” the DPL announced in a media advisory on Saturday, August 30 after Friday’s match.
Digvesh Rathi has been fined a staggering 80% of his match expenses for his verbal altercation with star batsman Nitish Rana.
“Nitish Rana has been fined 50% of the match fees for a Code of Conduct breach under Article 2.6 (Level 1) – Using a gesture that is obscene, offensive or insulting during a match,” the DPL added.
Interestingly, the incident happened on Friday when Nitish Rana was batting and used a premeditated reverse sweep to hit the ace spinner for a boundary. The batter indicated writing something on his bat shortly after the shot, a gesture that is oddly connected to Digvesh Rathi after he makes a breakthrough. When the bowler saw the behavior, he yelled at the West Delhi Lions skipper.
The officials and other players had to step in to prevent the two from continuing their altercation. After the game was over, though, the referee determined that both players had violated the rules of fair play. Without any more hearings, the two players were sanctioned after entering guilty pleas to the offense.
Rana excels in the victory for West Delhi.
Speaking of the game, Rana is the highlight of the evening after hitting a spectacular century in the crucial encounter for his team. Rana went on to help his team secure a spot in the competition’s Qualifier 2 by scoring an undefeated 134 off just 55 balls, which featured eight fours and 15 massive sixes. At the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi, the West Delhi-based team will now play the East Delhi Riders in the second qualifying round on Saturday.
