"Doubts do run through your mind a little bit" - Chris Woakes on his England future after a long injury break

Chris Woakes, a veteran English all-rounder, hopes to make an impact for the Three Lions this summer after recuperating from a knee injury that caused him to miss a significant amount of cricket. Last summer, Chris Woakes missed the entire season and did not play any first-class cricket.

Chris Woakes last played for England in March 2022 against the West Indies in a Test series. Chris Woakes is a potent user of the new ball. Birmingham’s 34-year-old pacer was disgruntled after missing last season’s action and even pondered his future due to a knee injury. However, his recall to the national team for the lone Test against Ireland revived his prospects of regaining his position in Ben Stokes’ eleven.

“Last summer was particularly difficult for me, as I missed not only England cricket but all cricket. When Brendon called me, it didn’t feel like my first call-up, but it always means a great deal and it’s wonderful to be back in the game.

“These doubts (about playing for England again) do cross your consciousness a little bit.Chris Woakes told reporters at Lord’s on Tuesday, “Whether it’s form, injury, or something else, there’s always someone knocking on the door, younger players ready to come in.”

With a massive summer on the horizon, you want to be a part of it. Chris Woakes

Woakes hopes to be a part of next month’s spectacular Ashes matchup between Ben Stokes‘ England and Australia’s archrivals, and he is preparing for the match. The 34-year-old stated that although the team is concerned about the health of a few fast bowlers, they have a plethora of fast bowling alternatives that will be tested during the upcoming summer.

“Every time you put on the jersey, it’s an opportunity to impress and contribute to team victories, and with a massive summer ahead, you want to be a part of that. When viewed as a whole, our pool of rapid bowlers is exceptionally strong. Obviously, there have been a few niggles, and with a busy summer ahead, we will likely need that large pool of fast bowlers at some stage,” he added.
