Don't think Sam Konstas will survive as Test opener playing like that: Ricky Ponting

During the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, the supporters saw some of the team’s younger players put up outstanding performances. During the series, 19-year-old Sam Konstas was among the youthful players who caught the Indian squad off guard. At the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), the young player had a spectacular debut during the five-match Test series during the Boxing Day Test.

In just 65 deliveries, the teenage wonder hit a scorching 60 at the ‘G’ in the fourth Test, which included two sixes and six fours. His explosive start caused all the experts to speculate about his potential future in the game. Ricky Ponting, the former captain of Australia and three-time world champion, had some intriguing things to say about the young batter. He said that he still has a lot to learn and may not be as successful playing the way he has done so far.

“I don’t think he can play like that all the time and be a Test opening batsman.” Therefore, I believe he will learn a lot from his first few games as a batter, but he will also learn a lot as an international athlete. He had a great time at the MCG, which is a large stage,” Ricky Ponting stated on the ICC Review show.

“I’ve witnessed this occur frequently with young athletes. They arrive, become a little overwhelmed by everything, and need a few games or series to truly figure out who they are and what they need to do to succeed as international players,” he continued.

In the first innings of the Boxing Day Test, Konstas may not have been able to duplicate that feat, and he finished the series with 113 runs at an average of 28.25.

He will get another chance to play red-ball cricket after being selected for the team to play in a two-match Test series against Sri Lanka, which will be captained by Steven Smith. Regular captain Pat Cummins has called for a break. Galle will host both of the forthcoming series’ Test matches.
