At the Eden Gardens in Kolkata, Varun Chakravarthy appeared to be playing exceptionally well in India’s opening Twenty20 International match against England. England’s effort was severely hampered by his double-wicket over. The dangerous-looking and in-form Jos Buttler was Chakravarthy’s third wicket of the evening. He finished with 3/23, but his exceptional performance earned him the title of Player of the Match.
Following the first innings of yesterday’s match, Dinesh Karthik, a former cricket player who is now a broadcaster, republished an earlier tweet on his feed.
In essence, his November tweet from the previous year stated that Varun Chakravarthy should be called up for the Champions Trophy.
In his retweet from yesterday, Karthik implied that the Board of Control for Cricket in India ought to have included him in the 15-man roster for the prestigious 50-over competition.

India was able to limit the visitors to a meager 132 on a respectable batting pitch in Kolkata thanks to Chakravarthy’s three-wicket haul and the contributions of every other bowler except Hardik Pandya. Abhishek Sharma smashed an incredible 79-run knock off just 34 deliveries to start the run-chase off in a big way. India ultimately won by a margin of seven wickets with forty-three deliveries remaining. They will play their next match on January 25 at Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium.
It is noteworthy that Karthik sent out the tweet last year while the mystery spinner was on a 12-wicket tour in South Africa. There were rumors that Chakravarthy would have a chance to be picked in the Champions Trophy squad after his 18-wicket campaign in the recently concluded Vijay Hazare Trophy. It was not to be for the cricketer from Bidar, though. For Indian cricket, the Board of Control shortlisted four spinners: Washington Sundar, Axar Patel, Ravindra Jadeja, and Kuldeep Yadav.
