After taking a three-year hiatus to study for his university degree in the UK, Zimbabwe batsman Dion Myers is back in the game.
In the third edition of the five-match T20I series against India, the 21-year-old made a spectacular half-century while under duress, bringing his team dangerously close to victory. But in the end, the hosts were short by 23 runs, thus his efforts were in vain.
Myers made his debut for his country shortly after leading Zimbabwe in the 2020 U19 World Cup. The young player was on the team when he made the decision to temporarily give up cricket in order to focus on his education. Following his comeback, Myers said he had studied himself over the previous few years and trained to be ready to return to the international cricket scene.
The cricket player said that although it was difficult at times to juggle a lot of things, he eventually found a solution. He expressed gratitude to his teammates and family for their support over the road and said it was a dream come true for him.
“I’ve done a lot of introspection on myself over the past three years, reflecting on how my first tenure went and what I did well and what I can do better. To be honest, I watch a lot of cricket in addition to my own training. It simply helps occasionally to be able to look at things from a broad perspective and see what you can do or what you can do better to contribute to the team, according to a remark from Myers that ESPNcricinfo published.
“Going back to the team feels unreal.” As a young guy, it’s something you fantasise about. I am incredibly grateful for the support from my family and teammates. Amidst challenging circumstances in the last few years, I found a way, and I’m quite pleased of that. It feels so good to be back on the team. I’m eager for the future and expect a lot more from this team moving forward,” he continued.

In the current five-match series, Zimbabwe is currently down 1-2. On July 13, the series’ fourth game will take place in Harare.
