After three years with the five-time champion Chennai Super Kings, New Zealand opener Devon Conway has formally announced his departure ahead of the IPL 2026 retentions. Devon Conway thanked CSK supporters for their support in a touching social media statement. His departure coincides with CSK’s efforts to restructure their team following a dismal IPL 2025 season.
After CSK’s IPL 2025 last-place result, the management decided to reevaluate their whole squad composition. The release of Devon Conway is just one step in a series of significant developments that have already taken place, like as the historic transaction in which Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran are going to the Rajasthan Royals in exchange for Sanju Samson.
He was on the release list last season due to his decline in form, even though he was one of CSK’s most reliable hitters in 2022 and 2023.

Devon Conway , who joined CSK in 2022, amassed 252 runs at a strike rate of 145.66 in seven innings. After that, he had an incredible 2023 season, finishing as the tournament’s third-highest run scorer with 672 runs at an average of over 51. In the IPL 2023 final against the Gujarat Titans, he scored 47 runs off of 25 balls, which was a key factor in CSK’s victory.
CSK is planning a squad overhaul.
Devon Conway was bought back for INR 6.25 crore in last year’s mega auction after missing the 2024 season. His 2025 campaign, however, did not proceed as expected. In six innings, he scored just 156 runs at a strike rate of 131.09 and an average of 26. As a team, CSK struggled, scoring just 693 runs in the first six overs of the season and finished with the lowest powerplay strike rate (137.50).
Prior to the IPL 2026 auction, his departure and that of Rachin Ravindra free up more than INR 10 crore for CSK. The team is presently focussing on developing young players. While Indian youths Ayush Mhatre and Urvil Patel are being prepared for big prospects, Dewald Brevis is anticipated to assume a bigger role. Samson is rumoured to be joining the team, thus the top order should appear even more formidable. As part of their reorganisation plans, CSK is also expected to let go of Jamie Overton, Vijay Shankar, Deepak Hooda, and Rahul Tripathi.
