Caleb Jewell, the opening batter, has signed with Derbyshire as an international player for the 2025 campaign. The 27-year-old Jewell, who has played for Australia A, is anticipated to play for Derbyshire in all formats.
In first-class cricket, Jewell, a left-hand hitter, averages 31.47. He played for Tasmania in the 2023–24 Sheffield Shield, when he scored a career-high 227 against Western Australia early in the season. In the Big Bash, he also plays for the Hobart Hurricanes.
Mickey Arthur, Derbyshire’s head of cricket, stated, “Caleb is a player I’ve had my eye on for some time, and everyone I have spoke to about him has said just what a good player he is.”
“Ian Bell and George Bailey, the Chief Selector for Cricket Australia, in particular, gave him high marks for ability.
“We realised that we needed reinforcement in our batting lineup for all formats, and having Caleb here for the entire season will help us establish the consistency we need.” He’ll elevate genuine grit to the top of the hierarchy.”
Jewell joined the discussion over who would replace David Warner and Usman Khawaja at the top of the Test order despite not having earned a senior cap for Australia. In 2023, he scored 66, 78, and 131 runs for the A squad.
“I’m looking forward to getting my first taste of county cricket with Derbyshire, to show what I can do in all formats and help the club win matches,” Jewell stated. “Many Australian athletes have achieved success in England, and I hope to follow in their footsteps. I can’t wait to improve my game under Derbyshire’s coaching staff, play with the team’s elite group of players, and collaborate with them.”
Derbyshire’s current County Championship season has been challenging; although coming near to making it to the final stages in both white-ball events, the club is expected to finish bottom of Division Two.

A two-year contract has been agreed upon by Middlesex all-rounder Martin Andersson and Jewell, Derbyshire’s second signing ahead of the summer of 2025.
