After missing the first two Tests because of a lower back problem, Pat Cummins was deemed fit for the third game and was instrumental in Australia’s series-winning triumph. He led the team well as Australia jumped out to a 3-0 lead, taking three wickets in each innings. In order to minimise any additional risk, the team management may decide to rest their skipper now that the series has been won, particularly in light of the next New Year’s Test at the SCG.
Australia might have to make some adjustments to their starting lineup for the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground after winning and holding onto the Ashes. After suffering a hamstring injury on Day 5 of the Adelaide Test, veteran spinner Nathan Lyon is also doubtful to play in the fourth Test, as does captain Pat Cummins.
“I felt fantastic, to start. similar to a typical Test match. I feel like my legs are still in good shape since I came into this Test match feeling very fresh, so I’m bowling mid-30s overs. There are moments when you have some lingering pain from earlier games. I am therefore feeling very well.
“We’ll see,” Cummins stated during the post-match presentation on the remainder of the series.
Knowing that there was an Ashes to be won, we built up fairly aggressively, and we felt that it was worthwhile. There may be a sense of accomplishment now that the series has been won, so let’s reevaluate the risk. Over the next few days, we’ll figure things out. We’ll talk about Sydney after I probably don’t play in Melbourne. Let’s take the chance and give it a shot, since it was before the series and during its existence. Now that it’s finished, I believe we should talk about it,” he continued.
Cummins also acknowledged that Lyon’s prospects were not looking good following the senior spinner’s right hamstring strain sustained while fielding in the opening session on Day 5. Lyon was seen leaving the pitch before lunch to get scans at the hospital after being forced to limp off the pitch. Lyon was seen celebrating with his teammates while using crutches after Australia’s victory, indicating the severity of his injuries.
“It’s not very attractive. I’m not sure yet, but it doesn’t seem good for someone who has a Test match in a week to watch someone using crutches. We have several people who have already seen international cricket around the traps, but it will be difficult to replace him,” Cummins stated.
