Travis Head, the great batsman, and Pat Cummins, the captain of Australia, have reportedly turned down offers of about USD 10 million apiece to leave international cricket and dedicate themselves full-time to franchise-based T20 leagues. An Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise organisation allegedly used an informal approach to entice the two players to join a worldwide T20 network that included tournaments in the Caribbean, the United States, the United Arab Emirates, and India.
The cricketing economics has shifted due to the popularity of franchise cricket. By purchasing franchises in other leagues, including SA20, ILT20, Major League Cricket (MLC), CPL, and The Hundred, IPL club owners have broadened their business. Players in these competitions typically receive multi-million dollar contracts, which are more than the pay offered by their respective national boards.
I don’t imagine a future in which I could play any other games: head
With contracts with Cricket Australia (CA), elite Australian cricket players reportedly earn approximately AUD 1.5 million (almost INR 8.7 crore) a year. But as national captain, Cummins makes over AUD 3 million (INR 17.5 crore), and he also receives USD 3.7 million (INR 18 crore) from his Sunrisers Hyderabad IPL contract. Head makes roughly USD 1.2 million (INR 14 crore) and is a member of the same IPL team.
Cummins and Head have both demonstrated their love for playing for Australia in a variety of formats. Head stated that despite the lure of franchise income, he had no intention of quitting international cricket.
“To experience what it would be like to play franchise cricket, I played MLC. I wanted to experience what it was like to play franchise cricket for four months after having played in the IPL World Cup. You want to experience things, to know how things work, and to have all of your options at your disposal. It was the ideal chance for me to learn about the decision-making process that many people go through globally and to experience what it was like for when the time comes for me to decide what I might or might not do in the future.
if I enjoyed it, if I was competent, or if I could do it. Get back into playing T20 cricket, as I haven’t done much of it in a while. I did that at the ideal moment in my life, but that moment has now passed. Head told the Sydney Morning Herald, “I’m playing for Australia right now, and I don’t see a timeline where I can play anything else.”
