Following the grave accusations made by R Ashwin over Dewald Brevis‘ acquisition as a replacement player, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have provided clarification on the matter. Ashwin recently made some comments regarding how Brevis was bought, asserting that the team had given his agency more money than Brevis’ base fee.
On his YouTube channel, Ashwin stated, “Dewald Brevis had a great time in the IPL last year after CSK got him in in the back half of the season.”
“I’ve even heard that he was being approached by two or three clubs, but they had to let him go because they couldn’t afford to pay him more. In the auction, he had a basic price, but he would have talked and negotiated with his agent to say, “I’ll join the team only for a certain sum of money.”
‘If I play this season, my value (for the next auction) will get higher,’ would have been his idea. ‘I’ll need the extra money,’ he may have said to CSK. “He came in because the team was willing to pay him more,” Ashwin continued.
Brevis was signed as an injury player to replace Gurjapneet Singh in full compliance with the IPL Player Regulations (2025–27), specifically Clause 6.6, which specifies the following, according to CSK’s official release:
“A league fee that does not exceed the league fee that would have been paid to the injured or unavailable player for the relevant season may be used to recruit a substitute player signed in accordance with paragraphs 6.1 or 6.2. “The league fee actually paid to a replacement player who is recruited during a season will be reduced to account for the franchise’s matches during that season that occurred prior to his registration, as well as any other pertinent deductions under the player contract,” the release uploaded by CSK said.

over Ashwin’s charges over Brevis’ mid-season signing, CSK’s post clarifies the situation. Speaking of Ashwin, the veteran all-rounder only took seven wickets in nine games, making it an unmemorable season. He also cost a lot of money, giving up runs at a rate of 9.12. According to sources, Ashwin and CSK are at odds about the spinner’s future position with the organisation, and it is possible that the team would let him go before the auction.
