Former India cricket player and SA20 broadcaster Robin Uthappa spoke exclusively to SA20 about his thoughts and experiences on a variety of league-related subjects. He talked on a number of topics, such as the tournament overall and his homecoming to South Africa.
Uthappa stated that players should play in both the IPL and SA20, and vice versa, in reference to the younger players in the SA20 league.
Robin Uthappa said of the SA20 tournament’s standards, “I think the standards have been pretty phenomenal.” Like Dinesh, I think it’s possibly the second-best T20 league cricket competition in terms of quality, behind the Indian Premier League. I think the cricket is quite good.
The atmosphere, the throng, and the excitement have been amazing. The fields where we play are very beautiful. It’s great to play cricket in Paarl. All things considered, I think this is really exciting for South African cricket, and I am confident that it will only get better from here.
Players from SA20 should compete in the IPL, and players from the IPL should compete in SA20, in my opinion.
Cricket would greatly benefit from it. The fact that this competition has developed and is mostly governed by IPL franchise owners shows that there is, in my opinion, more than enough competence in South Africa. One of the young players we’ve seen, Luandri Pretorius, has been outstanding. Uthappa went on, “I think there is a lot of talent here that is just waiting to be discovered.”
The former Indian cricket star also highlighted the presence of England greats like Joe Root in SA20 and the potential of international players in T20 events. “There are other experiences besides today. Every place I have been to in my role as a broadcaster, I have felt the spirit. You are aware that this is a really exciting time, and you can feel the enthusiasm in many places.
The grounds are getting crowded, even throughout the week. It’s thrilling. In my opinion, it has reignited cricket’s passion in this country, and I’m sure a lot of players will be paying attention. I anticipate that many more international cricket players will join us, and players from other leagues across the world will be raving about how great the game is here.
Regarding SA20 as a venue for Champions Trophy training, Uthappa clarified that the wickets will assist players in preparing for the highly anticipated game in February. “Well, it depends. Is it the places? Furthermore, the wickets have been a little slower than normal, which is normal in South Africa, according to my broadcasting at a few locations. I have no doubt that it will be a fantastic lead-up to the next Champions Trophy.
Robin said, “A lot of entertainment,” in reference to Dinesh Karthik’s SA20 performance. I think DK is one of the most exciting batters to watch, and I am a big fan of his batting. You and I have been playing together since our adolescence. He remains a vibrant young man. He is making a lot of noise behind the stumps, is quite enthusiastic, and is doing well for himself. I’m thrilled that his squad is at the top of the standings.
The former cricket player said, “I’ve been asking, when!,” in response to the question of whether he would like to play in SA20. I’m ready to go.
Speaking on his recollections of his time in South Africa, Robin Uthappa added, “It’s been incredible to be back here. I can’t help but think, ‘Wow, this place is great,’ wherever I go. There are moments when I think I’ve forgotten how beautiful this nation is. I’ve fallen in love. I have some incredible memories of Durban. Simply put, going back to this location brings back many pleasant memories. Actually, our first match before playing Pakistan was against Scotland. Since many of us were playing in our first T20I match, the game was a lot of fun.
Warm memories of the tournament as a whole, not just that one match. We thought the 2007 World Cup was amazing, and we thoroughly enjoyed every game in Durban. Even the hotels in the area where we stayed (sadly, we are no longer staying there as a broadcast team) bring back fond memories.
