Cricket Canada has stated that it is “actively monitoring the situation” in response to allegations that the men’s captain of Canada, Nicholas Kirton, had been placed under police detention in Barbados.
“Cricket Canada has been made aware of the recent allegations and detainment involving national team player Nicholas Kirton,” the board stated in a statement. “We are keeping a careful eye on events as they happen and carefully monitoring the situation. As more information becomes available, Cricket Canada will publish updates as part of its commitment to transparency.
“We take this issue seriously and are committed to maintaining the greatest standards of accountability and integrity in the sport. We want to reassure the public that our national men’s team is totally focused on getting ready for the forthcoming North America Cup, which will start in the Cayman Islands on April 18th, while this problem is being handled.
“Cricket Canada remains dedicated to supporting the team as they continue to represent our country with pride and professionalism.”
Canada will compete against the Bahamas, Bermuda, Cayman Islands, and the United States in the first-ever North Americas Cup in April.
According to a Jamaica Gleaner article, Kirton, a Barbadian, “was taken into police custody on Sunday”.
Kirton has scored 514 runs in 21 ODIs and 627 runs in 28 T20Is while playing for Canada. He participated in three CPL games for the Jamaica Tallawahs in 2020.
