For the 2025 Caribbean Premier League season, David Wiese has been selected to captain the reigning champion St Lucia Kings. Faf du Plessis, their full-time captain, is not present. Notably, the star South African batsman had withdrawn from the CPL for personal reasons, but he was later disqualified from both the league and The Hundred 2025 in order to get surgery on his groin.
David Wiese said he was thrilled to be given the chance to coach the team and eagerly anticipated the start of the season. Wiese’s stint in the Kings’ lineup was discussed by head coach Darren Sammy, who also encouraged fans to turn out in force for the team’s first home game of the year.
“I am incredibly honoured to be your captain. We shall be playing with unity, passion, and heart this season. We shall sacrifice everything for you and each other. In order to fill stadiums, create a positive atmosphere, and paint Saint Lucia blue, we need your support, fans. David Wiese said, “Let’s make this a special season,” according to ESPNcricinfo.
“David Wiese has long been a member of the family.
During his many years with us, he has given several outstanding performances. On August 23, we are eager to begin our first home game. We are aware that Saint Lucia Kings supporters are the best, and we know that you will turn the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground blue in support of our team and our new captain,” Sammy said on Wiese.
In 2021, 2023, and 2024, the former Namibian all-rounder participated in 26 games with the St Lucia Kings. He was selected by the Kolkata Knight Riders at the Indian Premier League’s mega auction, hence he did not play for the squad in the 2022 CPL. The team’s 2024 championship run was greatly aided by the star cricketer, who struck at 168.05, amassed 121 runs in seven innings, and claimed 13 wickets in ten.
David Wiese wore the Proteas shirt from 2013 to 2016 before retiring from international competition in 2024 to play for Namibia. He is now the first player from an Associate nation to captain a franchise tournament hosted by a Test-playing nation on a full-time basis.
