According to former English cricketer Chris Woakes, England has a chance to win the forthcoming Ashes against Australia. 2010–11 was the last time England won the Ashes in Australia. While touring in Australia, they have failed three times in a row.
Chris Woakes stated that playing red-ball cricket in Australia is difficult. He did, however, believe that England has the depth of their squad and the potential to compete with the Australians.
“We have an excellent team and a lot of depth. I’m hopeful the lads can go and perform well, but travelling to Australia is always a different beast. We have a great opportunity this time if the guys in the starting lineup can stay healthy and on the field,” Chris Woakes said in an interview with BBC Radio 5 Live.
Speaking about the intensity of the Ashes, Chris Woakes , who just announced his retirement from international cricket, said he thinks the current team is capable of competing in Test cricket in Australia.
Although ashes cricket is played with more venom, these players have enough international cricket experience to understand its rules. Although we haven’t quite gone beyond in the major series, we have been building nicely over the past few years. He continued, “These guys have what it takes in the locker, and we’re due for a competitive performance down under.”
In a five-Test series against India, England began their 2025–27 World Test Championship cycle with a 2-2 draw at home. Ben Stokes (17 wickets in eight innings), Josh Tongue (19 wickets in six innings), and Joe Root (537 runs in nine innings) were the English team’s best players.
A six-match white-ball series versus New Zealand, consisting of three ODIs and an equal number of T20Is, is England’s preparation for the Ashes. The start date of the series is set for Saturday, October 18.
