Chopra doubts India’s 2027 WTC prospects

Regarding India’s chances of making it to the World Test Championship final in the 2025–2027 cycle, former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra has expressed some concern. In the 2025–2027 WTC cycle, India has so far won four, lost four, and drawn one match.

In their quest for their third WTC final, Chopra believed that India’s 0–2 home defeat to South Africa might come back to haunt them. Additionally, he noted that India’s schedule will make it more difficult for them to make up the points they have lost.

“I’ll be completely truthful. You have lost both of your home games, so it has gotten harder. It indicates that you have lost all of your points. You had fewer than 50% of the points when you arrived from England. Against the West Indies, you received a perfect score. You will need to do well at home against Australia, New Zealand, and Sri Lanka. In a five-match series, you don’t win five games. In general, it doesn’t occur.

“It’s really hard to win 100% of the points there,” Chopra said in a video posted to his YouTube page.

The well-known pundit emphasised that the Indian Test team will face a difficult road ahead. Even on Indian soil, he thought it would be difficult for India to defeat Australia in all five Test matches; the two-Test series in New Zealand would be even more difficult.

“India’s chances in the WTC final are difficult. It will not be a simple task. I can tell you that with absolute certainty, and the news is not good. India ought to have scored 50% of the points versus South Africa and won at least one game. It won’t be that simple to take a zero from there and then hope that we would win both in New Zealand and at home against Australia. In New Zealand, we cannot defeat New Zealand. It will be difficult,” he continued.

India has a 48.15% point percentage after nine games in the 2025–2027 WTC. They are scheduled to play five Test matches at home (January–February 2027), two Test matches away from Sri Lanka (August 2026), and two Test matches away from New Zealand (October–November 2026).
