In the current County Championship, Sussex has been assessed a 12-point punishment for receiving four fixed penalties in one season. Cheteshwar Pujara, the club’s captain, has been given a one-game suspension in accordance with the ECB’s professional conduct rules.
This constitutes a separate offense under the Professional Conduct Regulations, and Regulation 4.29 specifies that the default punishment for such an offense shall be a deduction of 12 points.
“By virtue of receiving two additional fixed penalties in the County Championship match against Leicestershire on September 13, 2023, Sussex CCC has now met the threshold of four fixed penalties in one season, having previously received two fixed penalties in the Championship earlier in the season,” read an ECB statement.
“Regulation 4.30 of the Professional Conduct Regulations sets out that it shall be a separate offence for the captain where the same individual captained the team in all of the matches in which the fixed penalties were received, and that the captain will receive an automatic suspension of one match from that competition,” the statement continued.
Cheteshwar Pujara and Sussex did not object to the sanctions and have accepted them.
Haines, Jack Carson, and Ari Karvelas were involved in the incidents that led to the ban; neither has been selected for Sussex’s upcoming match against Derbyshire, which begins on September 19.
“Due to their behavior in the previous game, Head Coach Paul Farbrace has disqualified Tom Haines and Jack Carson from selection. A Sussex statement stated, “Ari Karvelas is also unavailable until an inquiry into an incident in the Leicestershire game has been completed.
Sussex, which had 129 points and was in third place, is now in fifth place as a result of the penalty.
