My bond with Chennai began before joining CSK: MS Dhoni

MS Dhoni, the former captain of India, talked kindly about the close relationship he has formed with Chennai over the years. Since the Indian Premier League (IPL) began in 2008, the seasoned cricket player has played a significant role in the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) team.

The Ranchi native reflected on his journey, recalling his Test debut against Sri Lanka at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chepauk, Chennai. He explained that his unique bond with the city started then and has only been stronger since.

“It’s been a long-standing relationship that began well before the IPL started… Back in 2005, I made my Test debut in Chennai against Sri Lanka at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. So, that’s where it all began. And yes, CSK played a major role in strengthening it, as I suddenly began spending 45-50 days here,” Dhoni shared during a private event in Chennai.

Even abroad, Chennai Super Kings is a well-known brand: MS Dhoni

The 44-year-old also discussed his long-standing bond with the CSK team, saying it has greatly influenced his development as a person and as a cricket player. The famous cricket player emphasised how CSK has developed into a worldwide brand with a devoted following that transcends national boundaries and includes cricket-playing nations all over the world. The seasoned batsman-wicketkeeper has guided the Chennai-based team to five IPL championships and is among the most accomplished captains in the competition’s history.

“So, I feel the relationship over the years has grown. It helped me improve as a person. It helped me improve as a cricketer. So, CSK just happened. I think it’s good for Chennai. So, today it’s good for me also. Nowadays when we go and say CSK, it’s not a brand only in India, but when we go to Australia, South Africa, or any of the cricket playing nations,” he concluded.

But CSK will be motivated to make a big return in the 2026 season after finishing last in the IPL 2025 standings. The team will try to show off their full potential and pursue a record-breaking sixth IPL championship with a fresh emphasis.
