'That's the main concern'-  Charith Asalanka admits crucial point of improvement after thumping loss to WI in series opener

Compared to their performances at the T20 World Cup 2024 and the series against India, Sri Lanka demonstrated a far more remarkable performance in the opening Twenty20 International of the three-match series against the West Indies, but ultimately failed to win. After reaching a competitive 179-run total at the innings break, the Windies’ openers’ hammering performance destroyed them, and the visitors won the match with five wickets and as many deliveries remaining.

The hosts’ captain, Charith Asalanka, was ready to give the opposition’s hitters credit for winning the match. It was an experiment on his part, he acknowledged, to bowl Chamindu Wickramasinghe, a 22-year-old batting all-rounder, in the powerplay. Furthermore, Asalanka revealed who he would prefer to start in the upcoming games.

“I thought there were more good shots than poor bowling. First and foremost, I should give their batters credit. We could have performed a bit better in the powerplay, though, in my opinion. Since he is an all-rounder and a part-time bowler for me, I just wanted to bowl a few overs from Chamindu [Wickramasinghe], who is still experimenting. But in this match, it didn’t work. Maheesh [Theekshana] might start in the upcoming games,” Asalanka said during the news conference held after the game.

Regarding his team’s overall performance, Asalanka expressed optimism and pointed out the main area in which he would like Sri Lanka to improve in the upcoming matches.

“We are playing good cricket, which is a positive. The primary area of worry for me as captain is that we need to do better at powerplay bowling. Asalanka continued, “We’ll talk and perform better in the upcoming games.

The West Indian hitters had an easier time chasing runs because the hosts gave up 20 more runs than they scored in the first six. Even though Rovman Powell was removed by Maheesh Theekshana, the West Indies won the match on Sunday.
