In a thrilling final on Sunday, March 9 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, India defeated New Zealand to win the 2025 Champions Trophy for the first time since 2013.
Choosing to bat first, Rachin Ravindra batted forcefully inside the opening powerplay, giving New Zealand a thrilling start. The floodgates opened for the Men in Blue when Varun Chakaravarthy removed Will Young in the eighth over. The New Zealand team collapsed to 75/3 in the 13th over as Kuldeep Yadav removed Rachin and Kane Williamson in quick succession.
In the 24th over, Ravindra Jadeja sent the wicketkeeper-batter packing, ending the calm 33-run stand that Daryl Mitchell and Tom Latham had been trying to maintain. In an attempt to form a partnership with Mitchell, Glenn Phillips played an unusual knock. For the fifth wicket, they scored 57 runs off 87 balls.
Chakaravarthy got rid of Phillips for 34. But Mitchell batted carefully and scored a significant half-century. New Zealand scored 251/7 in their 50 overs, with Michael Bracewell helping them finish strongly in the last overs.
When Rohit Sharma attacked the Kiwi bowlers during the powerplay, he took the bull by the horns. By dropping anchor, Shubman Gill gave his skipper a wonderful compliment. It appeared as though India would win the match easily when they amassed 105 runs in the first 19 overs.
But New Zealand’s spinners squeezed the flow of runs, taking three quick wickets. To calm things down, Shreyas Iyer and Axar Patel put up 61 runs for the fourth wicket. However, India needed Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul to come up, thus both batters were removed quickly. They scored 38 runs off of 36 balls while batting freely. When India needed just 11 runs to win, the former was out.
Ravindra Jadeja struck a boundary behind square leg to end the match. With four wickets and an over remaining, India easily won.
