Champions Trophy 2025: After taking Travis Head's catch, the umpire admonished Shubman Gill
When Travis Head was dismissed by Varun Chakravarthy during an attempt at a lofted drive in the long-off region during the Champions Trophy semi-final match in Dubai, the Indian players and supporters celebrated. The hitter who had previously given the team nightmares was gone.

Shubman Gill took the catch after covering a considerable amount of ground. However, he immediately released the ball after making the catch, prompting umpire Richard Illingworth to issue a warning. Gill made the grab cleanly, but he was still given a warning for releasing the ball too soon since the MCC rules require the player to have complete control over his own movement when making the catch.

According to the rule, “the act of making a catch shall begin when the ball first makes contact with a fielder’s person and shall end when a fielder obtains complete control over both the ball and his/her own movement.”

Steve Smith performs a knock for a captain.

Speaking of the game, after 41 overs, the Australians are now at 214/6. Steve Smith, the Australian captain, struck four fours and one six in a resolute 73-run innings off 96 balls. Glenn Maxwell, who was out for just seven runs, swiftly followed him to the pavilion after he was bowled by Mohammed Shami in the 37th over. Ben Dwarshuis is batting with Alex Carey, who is currently holding one end up.
