Kane Williamson, the former captain of New Zealand, has stated that he saw Shubman Gill‘s potential as a captain early in his career and that the young captain possesses knowledge above his years. After Rohit Sharma retired from the longest format in May, Gill recently assumed leadership of the Test team.
Gill and Williamson shared the Gujarat Titans (GT) dressing room during the Indian Premier League (IPL) seasons of 2023 and 2024. Since 2024, the batter from Punjab has led the Titans as captain. Gujarat made it to the qualifiers this year under his leadership.
“Hasn’t he responded beautifully? I’ve always believed Shubman does well as captain. I am aware that events in a franchise setting are rather different; captaining your nation is a far more time-consuming endeavour, whereas this is a shorter project. Observing Shubman in action, Williamson told the Times of India, “He’s wise beyond his years, and that responsibility is something that he would naturally look to take on.”
Shubman Gill is a world-class batsman, according to Williamson, and the experience he is gaining from the current Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy will help him in the future.
I wasn’t surprised to see him get that chance, but it goes without saying that the player is of a high calibre. He is very exceptional. It’s been incredible to watch him come over here and dominate like he has in situations that may occasionally be difficult with the Dukes. Although it’s still early, he continued, “there are going to be really valuable lessons for him and we’re looking towards the leader that he will become.”
India is behind England 1-2 in the five-match series, and Shubman hasn’t had the finest start as Test captain. But as a batsman, the Firozpur native has excelled, scoring 607 runs at an average of 101.17 from six innings. By a wide margin, he leads the series in runs scored.
