During the second ODI of the three-match series between South Africa and India, Nandre Burger suffered a hamstring injury. According to ESPNcricinfo, preliminary evaluations suggest that the left-arm seamer has hurt his right hamstring, which may ultimately affect the remainder of his season.
After delivering the opening ball in his seventh over in Raipur, Burger lost his run-up twice. When he ran in, he grimaced in pain since he couldn’t land on his right leg. With the help of the team physiotherapist, he staggered off the pitch after pulling his right leg in agony. In order to complete the final five deliveries of the 39th over of the innings, Aiden Markram had to enter the attack.
At first, the 30-year-old was not named for the five Twenty20 Internationals that would come after the 50-over portion of the all-format series. On Saturday, December 6, Burger, a key member of the Proteas’ bowling lineup, will not play in the series’ third and final ODI. It’s possible that Anrich Nortje will return to the T20I XI.
The fast bowling unit in South Africa is already struggling due to its depletion. Due to a niggle, Kagiso Rabada was left off of the final team. Gerald Coetzee, however, was not chosen by the selection committee because of issues with his fitness.
In relation to Burger, he has experienced a lengthy series of injuries.
This includes a lower back stress fracture that prevented him from playing competitive cricket in any capacity between October of last year until September of 2025. Additionally, he did not attend the prior SA20 installment. Burger was re-signed by the Johannesburg Super Kings for R6.3 million.
Burger finished the second ODI with stats of 1/43 in 6.1 overs, despite taking a few wickets (2/65 in 10 overs) in the series opener. Former India captain Rohit Sharma was taken out by him after a short spell of 14 off 8. Rohit was removed by Burger on the fifth ball of the fifth over.
