Bumrah’s double yorker brilliance

On Day 1 of the first Test match between India and the West Indies at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Thursday, October 2, Jasprit Bumrah claimed his second and third wickets with very identical deliveries. As the West Indies were bowled out for 162 in 44.1 overs, Bumrah finished with three wickets.

The touring team’s eventual leading scorer, Justin Greaves (32 off 48), was destroyed by sheer speed on the last delivery of the 39th over. The ball had already sped past him when he attempted to bring his bat down, sending the off-stump cartwheeling. The delivery beat Layne, which was travelling at around 141 kph, ended up rattling the furniture.

In his subsequent over, Bumrah dismissed debutant Johann Layne for the third time.

The West Indies had chosen to bat first after winning the toss earlier in the day. By the time lunch was called, the visitors had lost half of their team due to pressure from the new-ball combination of Mohammed Siraj and Bumrah in the first session. By the end of the first session, they were 90/5 in 23.2 overs. After that, they could only add 72 more.

While Bumrah took out three, Siraj finished up with a four-fer. Washington Sundar contributed one, and Kuldeep Yadav took up a few. Both Ravindra Jadeja and Nitish Kumar Reddy returned without a wicket.

In order to reduce the deficit as much as possible, India will like to make the most of the third session. They are strong favourites going into this series and will try to live up to the hype. Notably, following their disastrous 0–3 loss to New Zealand last year, this is their first home Test series.
