After India lost the first Test match at Eden Gardens, star pacer Jasprit Bumrah was spotted approaching South Africa captain Temba Bavuma in a heartwarming gesture that swiftly went viral. This put an end to the controversy surrounding the now-famous “bauna” remark. In Kolkata, where South Africa recorded a historic 30-run victory to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series, the gesture followed a difficult three days.
Bumrah and wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant were captured on stump microphones discussing a possible review against Bavuma on Day 1, which sparked the uproar. Many fans took this as a jab at Bavuma’s height. Ashwell Prince, the batting coach for South Africa, as well as fans and past players took notice of the video when it swiftly became popular on social media. According to reports, Bavuma was also aware of the remark and its consequences.
Bumrah quipped, “bauna bhi hai,” following an LBW appeal in the 14th over.
Nevertheless, Bumrah approached Bavuma directly for a quick conversation after the last wicket was removed and India collapsed to 93 all out. With his arm around the South African captain’s shoulders, the pacer was seen on camera presenting his case. After exchanging hugs, Bavuma was shown shaking hands to conclude the altercation.

South Africa’s historic victory
In the meantime, South Africa’s 30-run triumph was the second-smallest target ever defended on Indian territory and their first Test victory in India in 15 years. The Proteas displayed bowling mastery, particularly Simon Harmer, who claimed an incredible four-fers in both innings, while defending just 124.
Under duress, India, without skipper Shubman Gill, who was sidelined for the Test match because of a neck spasm, fell apart. Washington Sundar (31) was the only player who put up a fight as the home team lost on a pitch that bounced and turned unevenly.
Earlier, on a challenging track, South African captain Bavuma delivered one of his best knocks of the season, going undefeated at 55. It was the match’s only fifty and was essential in getting South Africa from 93/7 to 123, the match-winning lead. Before Bumrah and Siraj concluded the innings, Corbin Bosch provided him with support.
India’s pursuit got off to a terrible start. Both openers, KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal, were out of the game in three overs thanks to Marco Jansen’s outstanding spell. India’s batting slumped when Harmer and Keshav Maharaj entered the attack. Ravindra Jadeja and Dhruv Jurel left shortly after Rishabh Pant fell gently to Harmer. There was a short glimmer of hope with Axar Patel’s late attack, which included two sixes off Maharaj, but South Africa swiftly completed the task and won a historic match.
