Brendan Taylor set for ODI return as Chevrons announce squad

In the forthcoming two-match series at home against Sri Lanka, veteran cricketer Brendan Taylor is set to make his ODI return for Zimbabwe after four years away. His ban for breaking the ICC’s anti-corruption code was just lifted. Taylor played in the second Test match against New Zealand earlier this month, marking his comeback to international cricket.

Convener of Selectors David Mutendera of Zimbabwe said he was thrilled to see Brendan Taylor return to the 50-over format.

He was confident that the team would put up a fierce battle against the Lankan Lions, who will be hosting a formidable squad on their next visit.

“We are thrilled to have Brendan rejoin our team. His presence will undoubtedly improve the dressing room, and his skills and knowledge are invaluable, particularly under pressure. In order to give us the best chance against a formidable Sri Lankan team, this squad was chosen. Mutendera said, “As we move from red-ball cricket to the fast pace of ODIs, that mix of experience and energy will be crucial.” ESPNcricinfo cited Mutendera as saying, “We have combined proven match-winners with players who are hungry to make their mark.”

Role clarity will be crucial: Justin Sammons

Justin Sammons, the head coach of Zimbabwe, was not shy in voicing his candid thoughts on the team’s recent international form dip and significant losses. He underlined that in order to go head-to-head against a well-prepared Sri Lankan team, every player must understand what is required of him.

“Zimbabwe has not had good outcomes lately. In addition to losing all of their games in a T20I tri-series against South Africa and New Zealand, they have been soundly defeated in two home Test matches against South Africa since June. It’s time to get used to the pace and intensity of one-day cricket after a challenging red-ball series. Role clarity will be crucial; each participant has to know exactly what is expected of them. “I think we can compete well against a very disciplined Sri Lankan team if we get that right,” he continued.

Craig Ervine will be in charge of the 16-person team. The Harare Sports Club will host both of Zimbabwe’s games before the T20I leg. Four new players will join the Chevrons, who haven’t participated in a 50-over game since February: uncapped seamer Ernest Masuku, Brad Evans, Tony Munyonga, and Clive Madande.
