Sherfane Rutherford put on a superb solo performance to keep the Los Angeles Knight Riders in the game after Trent Boult set up MI New York’s demolition operation, but their 154 for 8 was never going to be enough to test the powerful MINY batting. With 13 balls remaining, the aim was reached after half-centuries from Monank Patel and Nicholas Pooran.
While MINY have barely maintained their waning hopes, LAKR are now almost eliminated from the race to the MLC 2025 playoffs.
After MINY chose to field after winning the toss, things moved a little too quickly. Trent Boult bowled three overs inside the powerplay and took one wicket—all bowled—in each over.
After an inswinger eluded Unmukt Chand’s attempted drive and struck timber, the first wicket was taken from the opening delivery. Boult took care of Andre Russell in his subsequent over after getting one to shape in, keeping low, off a decent length. Andre Fletcher was approaching down the course when Boult hit his third. He got it to deviate enough by sending in a cross-seam delivery on a length.
Rutherford caused a little stir in the MINY camp, so Boult returned for the 19th over to get rid of him and finish his haul.
Rutherford took charge of the innings as he walked out with the scoreboard showing 29 for 3, receiving virtually no assistance from other batters until No. 8. With a stand of 30 for the seventh wicket, Matthew Tromp reached double figures and helped bring LAKR to a level of acceptability. He hit five fours and six sixes in his 86 off 44 balls.
The response was quite simple. Quinton de Kock was dismissed by Sunil Narine in the third over, but it took LAKR 13.4 more overs to claim their next wickets. Monank (56 in 44 balls) and Pooran, who was initially scratchy before finding his footing, contributed 112 runs for the second wicket. Monank contributed 46 off 38 balls while Pooran contributed 58 off 46 balls during the 84-ball partnership.
MINY required only a small portion of the 20 runs they needed from 3.2 overs when Russell finally got rid of Monank, as Kieron Pollard and Pooran hurried them to the mark. Pollard smashed two sixes in his six-ball 14 not out, while Pooran finished with 62 not out from 47 balls, six fours, and two sixes.
