The Border-Gavaskar rivalry just grew in strength: Mitchell Starc

India is preparing for their November 2024 Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) tour to Australia. One of cricket’s most intensely disputed rivalries, the BGT now vies with the legendary Ashes series between Australia and England.

Australian cricketer Mitchell Starc recently underlined the importance of the BGT, saying that, to Australian cricketers and supporters, it is comparable to the Ashes.

Since 1996, the Border-Gavaskar Trophy has been a mainstay of the cricket calendar, named in honour of cricketing giants Sunil Gavaskar of India and Allan Border of Australia.

It has become quite well-known over time and a major occasion for both countries. India has won the last four editions of the series, including two historic away series victories in 2018–19 and 2020–21, demonstrating their recent dominance over the competition.

“There are two major Australian cricket competitions: the Ashes and the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Although the Ashes has a lengthy history, the rivalry between Border and Gavaskar has only been stronger with each series. He told the Wide World Sports website, “We now see it as a five-Test match series, which is fantastic for both the rivalry and the Test series.”

Now is the moment to apologise: Pat Cummins

Similar remarks were made by Australian skipper Pat Cummins, who acknowledged the task that his side faces. The bowler is hopeful that this time around the team can alter the outcome.

It’s been a long time because we haven’t been successful in the last two series here in Australia. It’s hopefully time to make things right. You know, we’ve faced them numerous times and lost, but we’ve also triumphed over them numerous times, which gives us confidence,” Cummins remarked.

Given that both teams are now atop the World Test Championship (WTC) points standings, the forthcoming series is even more important. With sixty important points at stake, the BGT has the ability to influence the final standings and choose which two teams will play in the Lord’s WTC final in 2025.
