On Monday, November 25, the Mumbai Indians (MI) shocked the cricket community by acquiring uncapped New Zealand batsman Bevon Jacobs during the second day of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 super auction in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
Mumbai Indians have a reputation for surprising people at the auction table. Some of their acquisitions throughout the years have confused cricket fans. Dewald Brevis, an Under-19 World Cup star, was signed by them prior to his first-class debut. The Jamaican seamer Krishmar Santokie was the first foreign player to participate in the IPL prior to his first-class debut. In 2014, he also played for the Mumbai Indians. The Mumbai-based team has proven that following their gut has paid off, as they have won the IPL championship five times, which is tied for the most in the league.
The 22-year-old Jacobs acknowledged that when he woke up in the morning, he was taken aback to see his name on the MI squad.
“It was undoubtedly unlikely. It was a huge surprise when I woke up this morning, and it was amazing to witness. I believe it has just been a little overwhelming. “I am really appreciative of the opportunity and I am looking forward to it,” Jacobs told RNZ.

Given that the MI roster includes several elite international cricket players, the South African-born player is aware that it will not be simple for him to make the first XI. Nonetheless, he is eager to learn from the top players in the lineup and advance his skills.
“It’s simply an enormous opportunity. Getting game time is undoubtedly an advantage. But I think the biggest lesson for me was simply traveling over there and being able to learn as much as I could from the world’s greatest. Jacobs said, “I’m just seeing how much I can absorb while I’m over there.”
He has scored 134 runs at an average of 33.50 from six T20 innings. His strike rate is an outstanding 188.73, despite the fact that he has not yet reached a half-century. Prior to playing in the IPL, Jacobs plans to represent Auckland in the next Super Smash 2024–25. On December 26, he is anticipated to participate in the season opener against the Northern Knights at Hamilton’s Seddon Park.
With the Indian Premier League just a few months away, he said, “I’m just keeping my head down a bit and I know that I have to look at what’s in front of me, which is still trying to put my best foot forward for Auckland.”
