Beth Mooney Shines in Australia’s Comeback Victory

At least eight overs went by without any boundaries being scored. Beth Mooney reached her half-century on the 34th over’s opening ball. It was the same over that ended Kim Garth’s heroic knock of 11 off 47 balls. Sandhu had three wickets and 37 runs at the end of her spell. Alana King hammered her way to her first ODI fifty, as Australia reached 221/9 with a 21-run final over.

In Match 9 of the Women’s World Cup 2025, Australia Women defeated Pakistan Women by a total of 107 runs on Wednesday, October 8, at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. Pakistan suffered their third consecutive defeat at the competition, while the Australians continued their winning streak.

Beth Mooney reached her climax at the last end.

Prior to the powerplay, Pakistan requested that they bat first, however opening batswomen Alyssa Healy and Phoebe Litchfield were removed in quick succession. Nashra Sandhu removed Ellyse Perry (5 off 11) with a strike in her opening over. The Australians were in serious difficulty and five down by the end of the sixteenth over. Healy’s team was struggling at 83/7 at the interval, but Beth Mooney remained at the crease.

Garth made a spectacular comeback with the ball shortly after, taking three of Pakistan’s top five wickets. In the 13th over, captain Fatima Sana sliced off a delivery from Annabel Sutherland on the fourth ball. The game against India’s best scorer, Sidra Amin, was removed for 35 off 52 in the 22nd over. Eight down in the next over put the Women in Green in a bind.

The ninth wicket for Pakistan came in Alana King’s fifth over. The final wicket to be removed was Rameen Shamim, who had previously given up just 29 runs in her allotted 10-overs. She dropped for 15 off 64 to give Australia a huge victory that raised their spirits. With five points from this victory, Australia jumped to the top of the standings. Not unexpectedly, Mooney’s unique knock under tremendous duress earned her the Player of the Match award.

On October 12, they will now play the Indian squad in Visakhapatnam. However, on October 15, Pakistan will meet England at the R. Premadasa Stadium. A loss in the forthcoming match could eliminate Pakistan’s prospects of advancing to the global event’s knockout stages, therefore they cannot afford many setbacks.
