Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024-25: Bengal rest Mohammed Shami in tournament opener vs Delhi

Mohammed Shami, the star bowler for India, will not play in the Vijay Hazare Trophy opener against Delhi. Shami will be rested by Bengal for the forthcoming match, it was announced. Interestingly, the game is scheduled to be in Hyderabad on Saturday, December 21.

As a result, it appears doubtful that the bowler from Amroha will make a comeback in the current Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT 2024–25).

Following the completion of the T20 World Cup, Mohammed Shami underwent ankle surgery.

He has been recovering ever since, and it was anticipated that he will play for Team India on the trip of Australia.

With some outstanding players on the roster, the Bengal squad is ready to begin the List A tournament season. But because of a knee ailment, Shami missed a lot of games this season. He consequently skipped the BGT 2024–25 series in Australia.

In addition, India captain Rohit Sharma disclosed at a press conference that despite Shami playing a lot of cricket at home, he was still having problems with knee swelling. The Centre of Excellence (NCA) is still keeping an eye on the pacer at the moment, and the Indian squad has not received approval from the relevant authorities to resume playing international cricket.

Comeback in BGT appears to be depressing.

Mohammed Shami participated in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT 2024) for Bengal to begin his comeback phase. But subsequent injuries to his knee appear to have hurt his prospects of making a comeback for India. Now that the fourth Test, sometimes known as the ‘Boxing Day’ Test, is just a few days away, Shami may still have time to fully heal before taking to the pitch in Melbourne.

In addition, there were rumours that the 2023 World Cup’s top wicket-taker might now focus on white-ball formats in order to make his much anticipated return to high-intensity cricket with the Champions Trophy 2025 and the Indian Premier League (IPL 2025).
