NZ vs ENG 2024: Ben Stokes shares injury update after eight-wicket win in Christchurch

In the first Test match in Christchurch, England defeated New Zealand by eight wickets. Harry Brook scored 171 runs for the Ben Stokes-led team, while the skipper and Ollie Pope each got half-centuries to give them a 151-run advantage in the first innings. As the pacer secured a six and the hosts were bowled out for 254 runs in the third innings, Brydon Carse was outstanding with the ball. With a half-century from young Jacob Bethell, England easily tracked it down.

Ben Stokes, meanwhile, suffered a back injury in the opening Test.

The all-rounder missed the first Test match against Pakistan and the series against Sri Lanka earlier in the year due to a hamstring issue. He bowled 19.3 overs over the course of an innings against New Zealand and hobbled off the ground. The all-rounder said after the match that he was feeling good and that he anticipated getting better before the second Test. The 33-year-old also discussed his hitting and his partnership with Brook, which totaled 159 runs.

We have a really long batter order, so the way the tail played and the relationship I formed with Brook helped me get out of a tight spot. Despite having a tough workout with 20 overs, I was able to manage my back pain. However, I’m all OK and ought to be ready for the second game. In the post-match presentation, Stokes stated, “We’ll choose the team lineup before the next game.

Tom Latham discusses lost opportunities and subpar collaborations..

New Zealand scored 348 runs in the first innings, giving them a strong start to the match. They missed eight catches in the second, which gave the visitors a significant advantage in the match. In response, skipper Tom Latham said that while it does occur occasionally, he hoped the team would do better in the second Test. Additionally, he wants batters to form stronger alliances in order to take on elite England bowlers.

We had our chances and were generally content with where we were in the first inning. Guys weren’t intending to lose catches, and all the catches would have gone to hand on a different day. That’s cricket. It happens occasionally. Next time, hopefully, we’ll be able to perform better. You have to form some alliances since you always want more. It would be good to extend the ones we have. Latham remarked, “They have some excellent players who put you under pressure.”
