ENG vs WI: Ben Stokes outlines reason for same XI, discusses alterations in speed department in future Tests

For the third Test match at Edgbaston against the West Indies, England fielded an identical playing eleven. Other young players in the squad may have been given opportunities, but the team management made the decision not to, as the Three Lions led the three-match series 2-0.

Ben Stokes, the captain of England, said that the choice was simple and that the other pacers in the squad will have more chances in the summer’s remaining Test matches. The team is loaded with Chris Woakes, Gus Atkinson, and Mark Wood, but Dillon Pennington was the frontrunner to make the playing XI. Stokes advocated for a revolution in pace prior to the series.

Arguably, this is also because, with Ashes 2025 in mind, Atkinson and Wood will probably see prolonged playing time. However, Woakes is thought of as James Anderson’s replacement, which is why the all-round player currently seems unstoppable.

Another cricketer who did not make the squad for the West Indies series is Matthew Potts. Despite England’s comparatively simple schedule, Stokes said that Test cricket is difficult for the pacers and that the two will play in the summer.
