The T20I squad for the series against India has been updated for the Australian men’s team, with Ben McDermott making an unexpected appearance. Interestingly, McDermott has been included as a backup for Matthew Short, who may need surgery on one of his right fingers after suffering blood while fielding during the ODI series.
Short, who was positioned in the inner circle during the Indian innings, suffered a serious cut to his finger while attempting a catch in the second game of the just finished series at the Adelaide Oval. After being removed from the field right away, he received first assistance and treatment.
According to a statement on cricket.com.au, Short sliced his right ring finger severely during the second ODI against India in Adelaide while trying to catch Josh Hazlewood.
The tight schedule and more frequent matches than in the past have made the changes in white-ball teams more complicated, according to Australian captain Mitchell Marsh. Marsh claims that while some players experience injury setbacks and frequently switch between playing domestic cricket, the initial teams must be updated frequently. He believes that the teams must be adaptable with it, though.
We definitely have players coming and going, but given the hectic schedules and demands of the game, I believe that’s just the way white-ball teams have been playing for the past few years. We have some players returning to Shield cricket, as well as some returning from injuries. All you need to do is be extremely adaptable with it. When they do join the team, everyone knows their position, and it’s important to be very clear about that,” Marsh told reporters the night before the match, as reported by cricket.com.au.
Australia’s team for the first and second Twenty20 International matches against India includes:
Xavier Bartlett, Adam Zampa, Nathan Ellis, Josh Hazlewood, Matthew Kuhnemann, Travis Head, Matt Short, Ben McDermott, Tim David, Marcus Stoinis, Mitchell Owen, Sean Abbott, Josh Inglis, Josh Philippe
