Both players will be getting close to 40 by the time of the next ODI World Cup in 2027. Their choice to prolong their ODI careers was interesting, and it caught the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) off guard. It was generally assumed that they would retire following their Champions Trophy victory. But at the press conference after the game, Rohit reaffirmed his plan to play more ODIs.
The two are reportedly scheduled to speak with the BCCI shortly about their future plans.
“Yes, that will be talked about shortly. More than two years remain until the next World Cup, which will take place in November 2027. We have to have a clear plan for the big event because our previous victory was in 2011, and both Rohit and Kohli would be approaching 40 by then. The Week cited a BCCI source who stated, “We also need to try out a few youngsters in time.”
Given that their longer-term retirements were somewhat of a surprise and did not seem to be part of a long-term plan, it is unclear if Rohit and Kohli will have a proper farewell in ODIs. A BCCI source claims that since they only play in the 50-over format these days, one of the biggest issues is the long stretches of time they miss from their competitive cricket calendar.
Both players haven’t played in an ODI match since the Champions Trophy final. According to reports, the board is thinking of inviting them to compete in the Vijay Hazare Trophy later this year in order to make sure they stay fit and in good form for matches.
“Look, both Rohit and Kohli have significantly improved white ball cricket for the squad and the game overall. They have accomplished nearly everything. Therefore, I don’t think anyone will force their hand, but before the next ODI cycle begins, some professional and honest discussions will take place to find out where they stand both physically and emotionally. That is a determining factor,” the BCCI source continued.
