Reports: BCCI to fire skipper Harmanpreet Kaur after Women's T20 World Cup elimination

At the current Women’s T20 World Cup 2024, the Indian women’s campaign was lacklustre. After losing to the women of New Zealand to start the campaign, the team narrowly defeated the women of Pakistan.

In addition, India’s women overcame Sri Lankan counterparts but lost to Australian counterparts, so eliminating them from the competition’s group rounds. The BCCI is trying to decide on captain Harmanpreet Kaur’s future after considering the team’s performance in the competition.

According to rumours, the BCCI will meet with head coach Amol Muzumdar and the selection committee to talk over Harman’s future as captain. It is important to note that the meeting is anticipated to occur prior to the announcement of the Indian women’s selection for the three-match ODI series against New Zealand.

Harmanpreet Kaur’s position in the lineup remains unaffected, if the claims are to be believed, although the contracts of support personnel might not be extended.

“The BCCI will undoubtedly talk about whether to bring on a new skipper in the future. The Indian board has given the squad everything they requested, and we believe it’s time for a fresh face to lead the group moving forward. News18 cited an insider as saying, “The BCCI feels it’s time for transition, but Harmanpreet will continue to be an important member of the team.”

After Harmanpreet Kaur was named captain of India in 2016, the team advanced to the Women’s T20 World Cup semifinals in 2018 and 2023 and even played in the championship match in 2020.

Despite the team’s recent results in the Women’s T20 World Cup, Harmanpreet Kaur has been a mainstay for the Indian squad over the years. She is without a doubt one of the team’s most crucial players.
