Reports: BCCI to disallow select participation from players, strong medical reasons needed for opting out

In comparison to the high standards they have set over the years, India’s recent Test match performances have been incredibly disappointing. A 3-1 loss in the just finished Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 followed a home series thumping by New Zealand. Many internal problems were also entangled, which spiced up the story that was already being told.

On Saturday, January 11th, the All India Men’s Senior Selection Committee met for two hours at the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s headquarters in Mumbai, under the direction of Ajit Agarkar. The review was attended by Rohit Sharma and Gautam Gambhir, respectively, from the Indian establishment. Along with this, the BCCI President Roger Binny and Jt. Secretary Devajit Saikia were present.

The performance at the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, what went wrong, and the necessary course correction were all covered in detail.

However, don’t anticipate a hasty conclusion from the new BCCI administration,” an insider told India Today.

According to the same article, it was decided that no Indian player would be permitted to choose between bilateral duties at will. Senior hitters Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, among others, were the subject of discussions. In light of the recent events surrounding the meeting, players who choose to miss any games will need to give genuine medical justifications.

To those who are unaware, Gambhir and the board have already provided information about attending domestic disputes. This is recognised as evidence that the BCCI screens players who are dedicated to become top-tier red-ball cricket players. Many BCCI members think that there is no need to make a snap decision regarding Kohli and Rohit’s future Test careers. Both are anticipated to perform well in the next Champions Trophy, though.
