BCCI starts the IPL retention process and consults with franchise CEOs

The Indian Premier League (IPL) teams have requested that more players be kept for the league’s remaining three seasons.

All ten franchises were asked for their thoughts on the topic, and it has been noted that most of them support increasing retentions.

The BCCI permitted four retentions in 2021, subject to the restrictions that no more than two players from outside the country and no more than three Indians might be included. The probable modification may occur while the BCCI is completing the retention policy.

Moreover, the franchise owners are expected to make a final judgement on the topic during a meeting later this month. Hemang Amin, the acting CEO of the BCCI and IPL in-charge, recently conferred with the CEOs of the various sides to get their opinions on the matter as well as the salary caps for the following three years.

In addition to thoughts on the inclusion of Right to Match (RTM) cards—a feature that was not used in 2021—a mega auction is set for the latter part of 2024.

The majority of teams have asked for five to seven retentions, with one side even proposing eight, according to Cricbuzz. Moreover, a few clubs have expressed their belief that there ought to be no retentions whatsoever. In addition, the CEOs were consulted regarding the player purse, and their responses have been mixed.

The wage cap has been seen as having a potential range of Rs 110 to 120 crore, with an increase of INR 20 crore also being considered. As of right now, the cap is INR 100 crore. Additionally, the Impact Player rule was discussed. Sources claim that while coaches and players have expressed disapproval of the rule, members of the media are apparently content with it.
