BCCI AGM scheduled in Bengaluru on September 29, secretary election not on agenda

On September 29, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will hold its 93rd Annual General Meeting (AGM) at the Four Seasons Hotel in Bengaluru. Notices have been sent to the state associations regarding the specifics of the AGM scheduled for this Thursday, September 5. The gathering will take place on the same day as the city’s much-discussed High Performance Centre opens.

The fact that the election of a new board secretary is not on the schedule makes the next AGM one of the most intriguing events. Many believed that, in light of Jay Shah’s appointment as the independent head of the International Cricket Council (ICC), the new secretary would be chosen at the AGM. However, barring any last-minute changes, Shah’s replacement will not be chosen at the upcoming AGM.

In the event that the AGM proceeds as scheduled, the BCCI will need to call a Special General Meeting (SGM) in order to elect the new secretary.

presumably before to Shah’s official start of office as ICC chairman on December 1. The traditional items often debated and voted at the AGM, such as the appointment of a representative to the ICC, are included in the two-page, eighteen-point agenda. This development will garner a lot of attention because Shah will no longer be able to represent the BCCI at the international body, and the Board will need to designate a representative who is familiar with the procedures and activities that occur during ICC meetings.

Given that the AGM is being held in his birthplace of Bengaluru, it is anticipated that BCCI President Roger Binny will play a significant role. The previous all-round player for India may also be chosen to represent the BCCI at the ICC. In October 2022, Binny took over as BCCI president from Sourav Ganguly.

Other items on the agenda, according to a report, include the appointment of an ethics officer and ombudsman, the adoption of the annual budget, and the election and induction of two general body representatives into the Indian Premier League (IPL) governing council. Additionally, one representative from the Indian Cricketers’ Association will be inducted. In accordance with the Constitution, the AGM must also designate a Standing Committee and a Cricket Committee. At the AGM, an umpires committee is also scheduled to be established.
