Faruque Ahmed, President of the BCB, discusses Shakib Al Hasan's security concerns amid legal issues

Given the political unrest and associated uncertainties in his native country, Shakib Al Hasan’s participation in the second Test match against India may be his final red-ball match. Following a four-hour meeting and press conference on Thursday, September 26, Bangladesh Cricket Board President Faruque Ahmed appears to have undermined the star cricketer’s wish to conclude his Test career at home.

Significantly, Bangladesh is set to play South Africa in a Test series in their home, but Ahmed informed the board of directors that he was unable to ensure that Shakib Al Hasan would be allowed to retire as he had wished. Regarding security worries, the president of BCB stated that the government will determine his fate and that this is why things are out of their hands. As a result, when the top all-around player returns home via plane, the BCB will not be able to provide him security.

“Shakib’s security is not in our control. The government must provide the security, and he must make his own choices. We are unable to comment on his safety. Speaking to reporters at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium, Faruque said, “We are not able to offer security to any individual.”

“I am not a police officer, an agency, or the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB). We are unable to comment from the board regarding the security issue, so the government must resolve it,” he continued.

As Shakib is going through a difficult period personally, we are unable to comment much. Like him, I believe that nothing could be better if he could complete his final exam from this location, but higher authorities must guarantee his protection. He’s going through a difficult moment. He believed that this is the appropriate time for him to play in his final Test, and we have respected his choice,” Ahmed said in closing.

Shakib Al Hasan is charged with a murder in his native country.

For those who don’t know, during Bangladesh’s political turmoil, security officials at the Adabor police station considered Shakib Al Hasan to be an accused in a murder case. Shakib was notably a part of the previous administration before it was toppled. Following those occurrences, Shakib was given the assurance by the BCB that he would not encounter any problems should he return to Bangladesh.

However, the present administration and law enforcement organisations are requiring him to get a security clearance before he can participate in the South Africa series.

Furthermore, Shakib would continue to represent the national side until his culpability in the murder case was established, as BCB has previously stated.
