Why are Shubman Gill and Babar Azam present? - Basit Ali challenges the accuracy of the ICC's rankings

Former Pakistani cricket player Basit Ali drew attention to the ICC’s methodology for determining these rankings. Additionally, he questioned the rankings of Shubman Gill of India and Babar Azam of Pakistan, who are currently ranked first and third, respectively, and the absence of southpaws Travis Head and Rachin Ravindra from the top 10, despite their recent ODI campaigns being marked by notable superiority over right-handers.

With ODI standings, the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) rankings were first introduced in 1998. Players are now categorised properly under the headings “fielders,” “bowlers,” and “batters.” The way each player performs in the tournament determines where they stand. But the regulatory body’s evaluation process for these performances has remained glaringly secretive.

“I noticed that Babar Azam was ranked first among ODI batters by the ICC, followed by Rohit Sharma at number two, Shubman Gill at number three, and Virat Kohli at number four. Since I was unable to view Travis Head and Rachin Ravindra, I did not feel the need to read the remaining names. In my opinion, the ICC would prefer that Babar not perform. In one-day formats, he would be content to be the top hitter in the rankings. These rankings are given by whom? How come Shubman Gill and Babar Azam are there? “Basit posted on his YouTube account.

In addition, he emphasised how Babar Azam’s last ODI was several months ago and emphasised the southpaws’ outstanding World Cup achievements alongside those of Quinton de Kock and Virat Kohli. He also included the names of two hundred-striking Pakistani cricketers, so stepping up his criticism of the ICC’s rating system.

“The World Cup last year was Baber’s last ODI. At the World Cup, we witnessed players like Head, Kohli, de Kock, and Rachin. In the tournament, they received three or four hundreds. Mohammad Rizwan and Fakhar Zaman each struck a century for Pakistan. How do they rank things?,” Basit continued.

The Indian team’s hitters had a hard time scoring in the One-Day International series against Sri Lanka. However, Rohit Sharma, the captain of India’s One-Day International team, turned up outstanding performances in each of the three matches, placing him second on the rankings table with a rating of 765. Based on the August 13 rankings, he is now ranked behind Babar Azam, who is currently ranked first with a rating of 824.
