In all three formats, Bangladesh’s captain is Najmul Hossain Shanto.

Najmul Hossain Shanto, a gifted batsman, has been named Bangladesh’s full-time skipper for all three game types.

This decision was made by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) during a board meeting on Monday, February 12 at the BCB headquarters at the Shere Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka.

The Daily Star cited BCB president and youth and sports minister Najmul Hassan Papon as saying, “We discussed at length about captaincy… The board has decided to appoint Nazmul Hossain Shanto as captain for all three formats this year.”

In lieu of regular captain Shakib Al Hasan, Shanto led Bangladesh in both the home and away series against New Zealand in the previous year. The 25-year-old has managed the Bengal Tigers in each of the three international cricket formats. Under Shanto’s captaincy, Bangladesh has won three, lost seven, and had one match end in a draw in 11 matches across the three formats.

In December 2023, Bangladesh achieved their first-ever T20I and ODI victories on New Zealand soil under Shanto’s direction. Next month’s home multi-format series against Sri Lanka will be his maiden test as a full-time captain. Before playing a few Tests, the two Asian teams will play three Twenty20 internationals and as many one-day internationals.

Shakib, who is currently a member of parliament, according to Papon, is still their “number one choice for captaincy.” The board was nevertheless compelled to make the adjustment because of the uncertainty surrounding the talismanic all-rounder’s availability due to his eye issues. For those who are unaware, Shakib announced before the 2023 ODI World Cup that he would step down as the 50-over skipper following the main event. Shanto, in the meantime, had stated that he would like to captain the national team in each of the three formats.

Gazi Ashraf Hossain Lipu, a former captain of Bangladesh, has been appointed chief selector.

The BCB has named Gazi Ahsraf Hossain Lipu, the first captain of Bangladesh, as the chief selector. He takes over for Minhajul Abedin Nannu, who joined the panel in 2011 and was appointed chief selector in 2016.

Abdur Razzaq and Hannan Sarker, two former players, will occupy the remaining two slots on the national selection panel. Although the latter kept his place from the previous panel, Sarker has replaced Habibul Bashar.
