In the first Test in Sylhet, Bangladesh defeated Ireland by an innings and 47 runs, capping an incredible victory. With Najmul Hossain Shanto scoring 100 and Mahmudul Hasan Joy scoring 171, Bangladesh amassed an enormous 587 for 8. The visitors were bowled out for 286 and 254 in their two innings, ending the Irish threat thanks to a team effort.
With just five wickets needed to secure victory, Bangladesh was well ahead of the other team going into Day 4 of the Test.
Ireland got off to a good start with a six and a four in the second over of the day, even though the spinners had an upturn in turn. After Andy McBrine was dismissed on eight, Taijul Islam took over for the aggressive Matthew Humphreys, bringing the hosts down to 116.
Despite all, the Irish persisted. In their 66-run partnership, McBrine and skipper Andrew Balbrinie were particularly effective at using the sweeps. The two pushed the visitors over 150, and McBrine survived two DRS calls. Against the flow of play, Balbirnie was trapped LBW just as Ireland was winning, allowing the home team a chance through Hasan Murad. During his tenacious innings, McBrine reached his fifth Test fifty on the stroke of lunch.
Following the interval, McBrine tried a pull but failed to reach mid-wicket on the second ball of the new session. Jordan Neill and Barry McCarthy took 17 runs off Murad after Neill hit three fast boundaries. After an intriguing thirty-six, Murad finally removed Neill, and Taijul completed the victory by taking McCarthy out.
