‘I was surprised’ - Babar Azam's reappointment as Pakistani captain, Imad Wasim said

Imad Wasim, an all-rounder for Pakistan, acknowledged that he was taken aback to learn that Babar Azam, who had given up the captaincy after the team’s dismal showing in the ODI World Cup 2023, was once again being considered by the Pakistan Cricket Board. The 29-year-old resigned from his role as captain of the Test and Twenty20 international teams, respectively, after the massive tournament in India. Shan Masood was named the new captain of the T20I team.

However, PCB chose to fire Shaheen as T20I captain—his first series in charge—after an embarrassing 4-1 series loss to New Zealand. But under his direction, Pakistan failed miserably once more, and his captaincy is now in jeopardy.

Babar Azam, 29, was finally given the reins after the authorities got in touch with him once more regarding the position

Imad said that the decision to reappoint Babar rested with the selectors, discussing the entire development. He continued by saying that everyone in the nation was taken aback by their decision to reinstate Babar as the leader.

Indeed, I was taken aback. What can I say, the selector has the final word on this matter? They selected the team [in accordance with] whatever they believed to be the greatest alternative. Not only myself, but everyone in Pakistan was taken aback. Thus, I can’t say that I wasn’t startled, Imad stated in a Saj Sadiq interview.

Imad Wasim considers his surprising 2024 T20 World Cup exit

Pakistan’s unexpected elimination from the T20 World Cup was caused by their losses to the United States and India in the group round. Imad talked on the same thing, saying that Pakistan didn’t do well and that it took him a long time to recover from the competition. They had a strong team, he said, but it fell flat when it mattered.

Indeed, we must all acknowledge that our performance fell short of expectations, including myself. Yes, but that’s the way things are. Although I believe we had a good side, it didn’t work out. Any format, particularly T20, is susceptible to it. Yes, it was frustrating, though. I felt very let down. Imad said, “It took me a long time to get over it.”
