Following the conclusion of the 2023 ODI World Cup, Australia will remain in India to play a five-match Twenty20 International series against the Men in Blue. Due to relaxation, Australia’s head coach Andrew McDonald will not accompany the squad during the Twenty20 International series against India. While he is away, assistant coach Andre Borovec will be in charge of the team. Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Marsh, and Cameron Green—five players included on Australia’s ODI World Cup 2023 roster—have also been rested for the Twenty20 Internationals. Matthew Wade, an accomplished wicketkeeper-batter, will captain the group.
Andre Borovec will be leading the senior team for the first time.
In addition, McDonald is taking a rest before the summer Test series begins on December 14 in Perth against Pakistan. Prior to the World Cup, he was also sidelined from the T20I series against South Africa. Michael Di Venuto, the team’s hitting coach, was in charge at the time. But the 49-year-old was also rested from the Twenty20 Internationals versus India, which allowed Borovec to take charge of the senior squad’s coaching duties.
It’s interesting to note that Andre Borovec, 45, was McDonald’s Victorian grade cricket coach at a club called Geelong. For the first time, the former was a part of the Australia coaching staff during the 2021 white-ball tours to Bangladesh and the Caribbean. He went to Pakistan in 2022 as part of Australia’s trip. However, when McDonald assumed the position of head coach in May 2022, he was added as a full-time assistant coach.
Lachlan Stevens, the head of development for Cricket Australia and a former coach for Victoria and Western Australia, will travel to India to assist Borovec.
Australia hopes to win a sixth World Cup, setting a record.
The Indian series is not now on the coaching setup in Australia’s mind. On Thursday, November 16, they will play South Africa at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. This will be their seventh appearance in the semi-finals.
No other side has won more than two ODI World Cups, whereas the Men in Yellow have won five so far. The team captained by Pat Cummins has won seven straight games and has everything needed to win the championship.
